When You Need a Licensed Gas Fitter
In Queensland, any work on a gas installation, including connecting, disconnecting, or moving a gas appliance, must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. This applies whether you're on natural gas or LPG, and regardless of how simple the job looks.
Common situations that require a licensed gas fitter include installing a new gas cooktop or oven, connecting a freestanding gas BBQ to a fixed line, running gas to a new outdoor entertaining area as part of a renovation, replacing or relocating a gas hot water system (see our Hot Water Systems page), any suspected gas leak or unusual smell, and buying or selling a property.
Gas Safety: What to Do If You Smell Gas
If you suspect a gas leak, don't switch any lights or appliances on or off, don't use your phone inside, and evacuate the building immediately. Once outside, call your gas provider's emergency line, then call us. We'll attend promptly to locate and repair the leak and certify the installation before gas is restored. For urgent attendance outside business hours, see our 24/7 Emergency Plumbing page.

Frequently asked questions
No. In Queensland, connecting any gas appliance to a gas installation must be done by a licensed gas fitter. This includes cooktops, ovens, heaters, and outdoor BBQs connected to a fixed line. Unlicensed gas work is illegal and can void your home insurance.
The most common sign is the smell of gas, natural gas has a distinctive rotten egg odour added specifically so leaks can be detected. You may also notice a hissing sound near a gas line or appliance, dead vegetation over an underground pipe, or an unexplained increase in your gas bill.
Yes. Outdoor entertaining areas with gas cooktops, wok burners, or BBQ points are a popular upgrade in Brisbane and the Redlands. We'll assess the best route for the gas line, install the necessary pipework and bayonets, and certify the installation.
It's a good idea. A gas compliance inspection will confirm that all gas installations on the property are safe, properly connected, and up to current standards. It's particularly worthwhile for older properties where work may have been done without a licensed tradesperson.
Yes, we're licensed for both. If you're in an area without natural gas supply, we can install and service LPG systems including cylinder connections, regulators, and reticulated LPG setups.
